By the late 1960s Self had begun to use photographs for printmaking, this culminated in the series Power and Beauty. The images were drawn from a variety of commercial photographs of animals and birds, and the world’s first customised car. Using a photographic half-tone, each image is rendered so the appearance and character of the original is transformed by scale. ‘Joe Baillon’s classic customised car becomes elephantine, sinister and oppressive, more menacing that nuclear war-heads’.¹
