LUCIEN PISSARRO ET LE POST IMPRESSIONNISME ANGLAIS

MORNINGTON CRESCENT

1913 Spencer Gore (1878 − 1914)

Gore (1878-1914) was born in Epsom, Surrey and studied at the Slade. He was a founding member of the Camden Town Group, with the painters Sickert and Gilman; their chief subject matter was the seedy neighbourhoods of north London - domestic interiors, street facades, gardens, and music halls. Gore lived in Houghton Place, close to Mornington Crescent, and the liver-coloured tiles of the station, a feature of the north London tube line, look much the same today as they did in 1911 when this work was painted. Gore died of pneumonia at the outbreak of World War I.
