British Council British Council Visual Arts

This exhibition was organised by the British Council in collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation and the China International Exhibition Agency, and was the first showing of Moore's work in China. The exhibition comprised a total of 118 sculptures covering a 54 year period (1929-1982) the majority of works were drawn from the Henry Moore Foundation collection, supplemented by works from the British Council collection and Leeds City Art Gallery. The exhibition concentrated on the humanism inherent in Moore's work, particularly his exploration of recurrent subjects such as the mother and child, and included maquettes and early carvings as well as monumental bronzes. The exhibition was a focus for a broad education programme of seminars and workshops on the theme or urban planning, conservation and environmental issues, and cityscaping. A fully illustrated bi-lingual catalogue with a text by David Mitchinson, Head of Collections and Exhibition, Henry Moore Foundation was published to accompany the exhibition. ISBN 0 86355 456 3
