FIVE CONTEMPORARY BRITISH PAINTERS
Highlights
Artists (3)
An exhibition of 40 paintings selected by Sir Philip Hendy (Director, National Gallery, London) Basil Taylor and Colin McInnes, and organised by the British Council in conjunction with the National Gallery of Canada and Toronto Art Gallery. A catalogue, with an introduction by Michael Middleton, was published to accompany the show. No ISBN number.
The artists included Josef Herman, Ben Nihcolson, Matthew Smith, Robert Colquhoun and William Gear.
Reviews
The few press cuttings received were warm towards the exhibition and a writer in Montreal welcomed the idea of restricting the number of artists in order to show more work by each artist. Four paintings were sold: a Joseph Herman to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and three Ben Nicholson, two to the Art Gallery of Toronto and one to the National Gallery in Montreal.
