THE PREVARICATOR

1920/21 Walter Richard Sickert (1860 − 1942)

At the end of the First World War Sickert returned to Dieppe and the years 1919-22 were to be his most productive as a painter. This drawing is inscribed as being in the possession of Stephenson Southport. W H Stephenson was Sickert’s patron who bought a number of paintings and commissioned a series of articles for his own newspaper, the Southport Visitor. Stephenson was the first owner of the painting for which this drawing is a study.

Glossary (2)

  • Drawing

The depiction of shapes and forms on a flat surface chiefly by means of lines although colour and shading may also be included. Materials most commonly used are pencil, ink, crayon, charcoal, chalk and pastel, although other materials, including paint, can be used in combination.

  • Painting

Work of art made with paint on a surface. Often the surface, also called a support, is a tightly stretched piece of canvas, paper or a wooden panel. Painting involves a wide range of techniques and materials, along with the artist's intellectual concerns effecting the content of a work.
