SPRING CLEANING: EASTMAN'S THE LONDON DYERS AND CLEANERS

SPRING CLEANING: EASTMAN'S THE LONDON DYERS AND CLEANERS

1924 Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954 − )

Kauffer designed posters for the dry-cleaning company Eastman & Son from 1921 to 1927. They were bright and cheerful in colour and design, drawing inspiration from Regency type designs to art deco inspired decorative borders. The posters were displayed throughout the London Underground. Such was their popularity that during a break in production a sticker was posted up stating ‘A NEW MCKNIGHT KAUFFER POSTER will be here shortly’; Kauffer kept a copy of this all his life and it is now in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York.
