Peter Niczewski (1948 − )
p>Studied graphic design at Chelsea School of Art. Of his own work the artist has written; "I first noticed the craft marquetry through marquetry pictures which impressed me with their craftsmanship if not their design, although they often possessed a naïve charm. I began to apply marquetry to furniture; jewellery followed from this, inspired by the interesting work being produced around me and as a way of working through ideas which came up while working with the various dyed and natural veneers on my tables. On the tables I work with marquetry designs to represent such everyday objects as newspapers, fabric, ashtrays, things that may be found on a table. I enjoy playing with illusion and occasionally people have tried to pick up the represented object. I also employ illusion in my brooches as in the folded designs or pieces where I play with shadow, but primarily I am interested in pattern, shape and colour."
