In the autumn the Nash family used to visit Sinodun House, near Wallingford in Oxfordshire and in sight of the Wittenham Clumps: two distinctive chalk hills capped by beech trees. These held a particular appeal to the artist, suggesting something mystical and symbolic, Nash later described them as 'the Pyramids of my small world.'
