Edward Allington (1951 − )
Highlights
Edward Allington was born in Troutbeck Bridge, Westmoreland in 1951. He studied at Lancaster School of Art from 1968-71, followed by the Central School of Art and Design in London and later the Royal College of Art. He is currently Head of Graduate Sculpture, Slade School of Fine Art, and works as sculptor, draughtsman and writer, regularly exhibiting with Lisson Gallery in London.
After a visit to Greece in the 1970s he became interested in Platonic philosophy which influenced many of his works, alongside the conceptual and environmental art popular at the time.
He is best known for his part in the 1980s 'New British Sculpture' movement which included other artists such as Richard Deacon and Antony Gormley. In the late 1980s he developed his interest in classical motifs and has since completed major public commissions in Germany, France and the United Kingdom.
