Bernard Cohen (1933 − )

Bernard Cohen, mainly known as abstract painter, studied at South West Essex Technical College and later at St Martin's School of Art and Slade School of Fine Art, London.

Awarded a French government scholarship in 1954 and Boise travelling scholarship in 1957, he had the opportunity of travelling and working in France, Spain and Italy.

In 1958 he had his first solo show at Midland Group Gallery in Nottingham and in the same year he was dedicated a second solo show at Gimpel Fils.

In 1966 Cohen was included among the artists showing at the Venice Biennale in the presentation in During his career he taught at Ealing School of Art, Chelsea and Wimbledon and was Slade Professor and Chair of Fine Art from 1988 to 1990.

His early works were influenced by abstract Expressionism and later in his career became very colourful and precise in detail, as showcased in an exhibition organized by Tate in 1995.

His works are held by Tate Gallery and other public collections.
