Sydney Lee (1866 − 1949)
Highlights
Sydney Lee was born in Manchester, and studied at Manchester School of Art and the Atelier Colorossi in Paris. He was married to Frederick Elgar's daughter. Lee is known as an etcher and wood engraver, and for his rich and detailed landscapes. He was a founder of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920 and was one of the first artist-printmakers to engrave his own blocks. His most frequent subjects were town scenes and landscapes which offered opportunities to experiment with light and tone.
