Gerald Leslie Brockhurst

THE WEST OF IRELAND

THE WEST OF IRELAND

1928 Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890 − 1978)

This work comes from a group of plates showing Brockhurst at his full powers, whilst the minuteness of finish is more allied to craftsmanship there is no denying the draughtsmanship. The print shows two little Connemara sisters; his purpose was to show the contrasting characters of the two girls: one fair and ‘full of grace’ and the other dark and sullen. Brockhurst told the writer Harold Bright that the mother showed tremendous favouritism for the fair one at the expense of the other one, who felt so unwanted she drowned herself. Whilst this tragic tale maybe true, Brockhurst was rather inclined to over-embellish the truth.
